Carpet Spot Solver
No one likes dealing with spills on the carpet. However, with the help of the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), you can clean up spills before they become permanent. The steps below will help you quickly and effectively remove spots and keep your carpet looking fresh for years to come.
Carpet Spot Removal Steps
1. Act Quickly
Most modern carpets are treated with stain-resistant solutions, which means many spills can be removed if you act immediately. The longer you wait, the more likely the spill will become a permanent stain. Keep in mind that staining is influenced by multiple factors, and no carpet is completely stain-proof.
2. Blot Liquids
Use a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white paper towels without any printing. Do not scrub the area! Scrubbing can distort the carpet fibers. Continue blotting with the cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry.
3. Remove Semi-Solids and Solids
For semi-solids, gently scrape them up with a rounded spoon. If dealing with solid substances, break them up and vacuum them away until fully removed.
4. Pretest the Cleaning Solution
If you can identify the type of spot, refer to the spot removal guide for specific directions. Always pretest any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the carpet to ensure it doesn’t damage the fibers or dye. Apply a few drops to the test area and hold a white cloth over it for 10 seconds. Check the cloth for any color transfer or changes in the carpet. If there is any change, try a different cleaning solution.
5. Apply the Cleaning Solution
Apply a small amount of your chosen cleaning solution to a white cloth. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before working gently on the spill. Always work from the edges toward the center to avoid spreading the stain. Blot the area instead of scrubbing it.
6. Repeat if Necessary
Continue using the same cleaning solution as long as the spill is transferring to the cloth. If the first solution works, there’s no need to try others. Be patient—some stains may require several repetitions of this process.
7. Rinse and Blot
Once the spill is completely removed, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water. Blot it with a dry cloth to remove any leftover cleaning solution. Leftover solution can lead to rapid re-soiling if not completely rinsed. Lay a half-inch layer of white paper towels over the spot, then weigh it down with a flat, heavy object. Change the paper towels as needed.
8. Speed Up Drying
To speed up the drying process, you can use a dry, absorbent cleaning compound as a substitute.
